About Messenger Service Ads

What are Messenger Service Ads?
They are messages sent directly to your computer, by spammers that bombard a range of IP addresses. Sometimes called DirectAds, these ads can pop-up on Windows computers connected to the Internet by an always on broadband modem (cable/DSL/LAN) or on a dial-up modem. These ads are not to be confused with banner ads or pop-up/pop-under ads, as DirectAds do not use your Internet browser. They are anonymous, practically untraceable and can pop-up on your computer at any time you are connected to the Internet.

The Messenger Service was originally designed to allow network administrators to send warnings to users when, for example, a server is scheduled to go down for maintenance. Now some advertisers are using it to send bulk messages to anyone connected to the Internet with an accessible IP address.

What versions of Windows can get these ads?
Windows NT 4.0/XP/2000 have Messenger Service enabled by default.

How can I tell if I get one?
All Messenger Service ads look like the window below. Notice the title of the window is "Messenger Service" - unlike other pop-ups windows you see.

Example Messenger Service Ad

How do Messenger Service Ads work?
The Messenger Service, not to be confused with instant messaging applications, can use many different protocols to send a single message. In simple terms, a 'protocol' is a language that two computers use to talk to each other. Just as there are many different languages that people speak, there are also many protocols that computers can communicate with.

The intrusive messages only appear (by default) on computers running Windows NT, 2000, and XP and that are currently connected to the Internet via a valid IP address. Windows systems behind a firewall or attached to a router that links multiple computers to a single Internet address will be unaffected.
