InterMute : Privacy
Thank you for visiting our
Web site. InterMute, Inc. is committed to protecting
the privacy of our visitors and customers. The following
discloses our information gathering and dissemination
practices.
Log Files
In order to improve
the usefulness of our Web site for our visitors, we
automatically collect and maintain statistical information
from our site's data logs that concern network traffic
flow and volume. This information consists of:
- The name of the domain from which the visitor
accesses the Internet (e.g., a "company.com"; a "school.edu";
or an "agency.gov").
- The IP Address for your connection.
- The date and time the Web site is visited.
This information does not identify
individual visitors.
We may use IP addresses to help
diagnose problems with our server, and to administer
our Web site. We do not attempt to resolve IP addresses
or link them to individual visitors. We analyze
log files to determine how many people are visiting
our Web site and to determine what browser most people
are using, to better tailor our site and software
for compatibility. No attempts are made to identify
individual users unless illegal behavior is suspected.
Cookies
"Cookies" are
small data files commonly used by Web sites to record
their visitor’s
preferences and sometimes to analyze and recall user
interactions with the Web site. InterMute's web site
may use a cookie to save user preferences or so we
may evaluate and improve our visitor’s interactions
with our web site. In addition, our shopping cart
uses a cookie to process sales transactions. See
'Sales Transactions' below for further information.
InterMute 's customer support interface, which
is a hosted support service provided by RightNow
Technologies, uses a cookie to maintain user sessions
with the help desk. For more information about
RightNow's use of cookies please refer to their
privacy policy at http://www.rightnow.com/privacy/hosting.php
Product Information
Visitors
to our Web site may request support or information
about our products. When people contact us, we collect
their contact information (like their email address),
in order to be able to respond to them.
Feedback and Survey Data
Visitors
to our Web site may submit comments or feedback to
us regarding our products, services or other matters.
When people contact us in such a manner, we may collect
their contact information (like their email address),
in order to be able to respond to them. Our site
may from time to time survey users to gather feedback
and statistical data regarding such matters as user
satisfaction with our products or services, user's
computer or Internet problems or experiences, or
new features or products that users may wish for
InterMute to offer. InterMute may use a third party
service to conduct such surveys. InterMute currently
uses a third party online survey company called SurveyMonkey.
To read SurveyMonkey's privacy policy, please visit http://www.surveymonkey.com.
Sales Transactions
Our
site uses an online order form when customers purchase
our products. When customers purchase products
from us, we record and process their credit card
number, name, mailing address, email address and
optionally their phone or fax number. Sales transactions
are processed through a trusted outside credit card
transaction processing service. To read their privacy
statement please visit http://www.authorizenet.com/company/privacy.php
Contact
information from the order form is saved for future
reference, in case we need to re-send your registration
information to you, if you request that we do so.
For example, a customer may need to re-install our
software after buying a new computer. Information
we collect on individuals is kept confidential to
us. For product support and registration purposes,
buyers of products made by other manufacturers may
have their contact information shared with that manufacturer.
Security
This site has
security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse
and alteration of the information under our control.
Information transmitted during purchasetransactions
is encrypted using SSL protocols. For further information
about the security and privacy policy of our credit
card transaction processor, please see http://www.authorizenet.com/company/privacy.php.
Links to Other Sites
Our
site contains links to other sites. Please note that
when you click a link to one of these other Web sites
your browser is leaving the InterMute site and visiting
a different Web site. These other sites may have
different privacy policies and we encourage you to
read their privacy policies. InterMute is not responsible
for the privacy practices or the content of other
Web sites.
Software
Software to Server Contact
InterMute
software products will normally contact our servers
occasionally, to check for updates to the product
you are using. Regular updates to our software are
essential to maintaining the stability, compatibility,
and effectiveness of our software products, as new
browser versions and new operating systems are released
and as new ad servers or other sources of content
filtered by our software are discovered. Our software
may notify users when a newer version of the software,
a newer version of the software's filtering database,
or a message to display to the user is detected.
By default, our software products contact our servers
once per day at the start of a browsing session to
check for such updates. When the software contacts
our servers, it may send some non-personal information,
such as the product name and version, the current
filtering database version, the current filtering
configuration, a count of how many ads or items were
filtered, how long the product has been in use and
the type of Web connection used (Cable/DSL, LAN or
analog modem). Paid products may also send a product
registration code for verification purposes. No other
personal information is sent (except in a few cases
detailed below under Personal Information).
AdSubtract Local Proxy
Our
AdSubtract software product runs on a user's computer
to filter and block unwanted Web browser data,
such as pop-up and banner ads. AdSubtract acts as
a local filtering HTTP proxy between a user's browser
and a Web site on the world wide Web. AdSubtract's
filtering activity is local to the PC and does not
contact the adsubtract.com server. A user's browser
may display "Contacting
AdSubtract:4444". This message
indicates that the user's browser requests, including
the HTML that makes up Web pages, is filtered 'locally'
between the user's browser and AdSubtract's local
proxy software running on the user's computer.
Personal Information
Newsletter opt-in
Some of our software products collect the installers
email address during the installation. Each product
that collects an email address explains what the
email address is used for. Users who provide their
email addresses may receive the InterMute Advisor
email newsletter and an occasional email about our
products or services. Users of our products may opt-out
of receiving future emails at any time by sending
an email to opt-out@intermute.com with "remove" in
the subject or by following the instructions contained
in each email the company sends.
Business Trial Users
of our Software
Business trial users of
our software may be asked to enter some personal
information, including email address, street address,
and name. This information may be used by InterMute
for internal marketing purposes. The information
may be sent to an InterMute server by the software
product during the trial period.
Counter Club
The
Counter Club is an optional feature present in some
older versions of AdSubtract, which when enabled,
counts how many ads have been blocked by AdSubtract
on 30 popular websites. Some versions of AdSubtract
send the total number of ads blocked on these sites
when they contact the server. This information is
used only in aggregate. The count data helps InterMute
ascertain the popularity and effectiveness of AdSubtract.
The information passed is the total count of ads
blocked for each of the 30 sites, and the total number
of ads blocked on the entire Web. The Counter Club
can be disabled on the Updates tab of AdSubtract.
Mailing lists
InterMute
maintains a mailing list of users who have opted
in to receive news, offers and updates from InterMute.
InterMute does not sell, trade or exchange our mailing
list. Your personal information is kept confidential.
Users can opt out of the list at any time through
a link on the InterMute newsletter. Users may also
opt out of the list by sending an email message to opt-out@intermute.com with "remove" in
the subject.
