Description
PerfectNav is an error hijacker controlled by eUniverse.com.
With PerfectNav loaded, unknown domains and all error pages
(even for sites with custom errors) get redirected to a generic
search engine at perfectnav.com.
Variants
PerfectNav/BHO is the original version of the software.
PerfectNav/150 uses a new filename and class ID.
Distribution
Bundled with Kazaa Media Desktop around early 2004.
What it does
Advertising
No.
Privacy violation
Minor. The addresses of any error page or unknown domain
you enter is passed to the controlling server perfectnav.com
with a unique tracking ID.
Security issues
None known.
Stability problems
Because PerfectNav redirects errors before the browser has
a chance to try to access an address as a directory, some
web links that point to a directory without the trailing slash
will no longer work with the software installed.
Removal
With the 150 variant, uninstalling Kazaa from the Add/Remove
Programs list in the Control Panel may also remove PerfectNav.
Manual Removal
Open a DOS command prompt window (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command
prompt), and enter, for the BHO variant:
cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\PerfectNav\BHO\PerfectNavBHO.dll"
or, for the 150 variant:
cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\PerfectNav\BHO\PerfectNav150.dll"
Restart the computer and you should be able to delete the
entire 'PerfectNav' folder inside Program Files.
You can also delete the key 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PerfectNav'
in the registry (Start->Run->regedit) to clean up if
you like.
